Starting in 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation before entering most European countries. ETIAS is designed to strengthen border security while maintaining smooth and easy travel.
What Is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new electronic travel authorisation introduced by the European Union. It is designed to enhance security and manage travel more efficiently across the Schengen Area.
When Will ETIAS Take Effect?
ETIAS is expected to become operational in 2025. Once it is in place, travelers from certain non-EU countries who do not currently need a visa will be required to apply for ETIAS authorisation before visiting Europe.
Why ETIAS Is Required
ETIAS was created to help strengthen border security within the Schengen Zone. It allows European authorities to pre-screen travelers before they arrive, identifying potential security, health, or migration risks while maintaining smooth and easy travel for legitimate visitors.
Who Needs ETIAS?
ETIAS will apply to citizens of visa-exempt countries — that is, non-EU travelers who currently enter the Schengen Area without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days.
This includes travelers from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, and many others.
If you hold a passport from one of these visa-free countries and plan to visit Europe for tourism, business, or transit, you’ll need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation before your trip.
